Singer-songwriter pianist, Hannah May is a rising star among Tasmanian audiences. Her songs shaped in soulful style have been compared to songwriter greats Suzanne Vega, James Taylor and Carole King. Hannah May has absorbed influences from both folk pop and jazz music and her eclectic approach makes for entertaining sets of sensitively constructed and thought provoking material often with a strong underlying rhythmic groove.
Her performances major credits include performing alongside Clare Bowditch as part of her Winter Secrets tour in Hobart, backing vocalist for Damon Albarn (Blur) tour of Australia (Palais Theatre and Sydney Opera House) and touring the USA with the ARIA-nominated Southern Gospel Choir. She has supported Ian Moss, from Cold Chisel, and worked and sung with artists including Monique Brumby, Bobby Flynn and Wes Carr, Daniel Champagne and The Audreys. Hannah May is currently recording her debut album, The Little Things with engineer, Stewart Long, producer Rob Long and arranger/pianist Matt Boden. In 2018 , 2019 and 2020, she released three singles off the album, ‘Sigh’, ‘Ring The Bell’ and Little Flower. The album is slated for a 2021 release
About HM Studio: Sing Play Write
Hannah May is a highly respected and vocal and songwriting teacher and coach based in Hobart, Tasmania to many young singers, performers and writers. She holds a Bachelor of Music with a major in Contemporary Voice studying under local and interstate vocal coaches at the University of Tasmania, Australia.
Hannah May has completed further singing and teaching singing training through a number of courses over her 10 years of teaching and continues to build upon her professional development.
Her recent professional development has included Level 1 and Level 2 of Estill Vocal Training, Week 1 and Week 2 of Online Singing Teacher Course with The Vocal Process, and 10 Weeks of Technique with Dane Chalfin.
She teaches from her home-based practice – HM Studio: Sing Play Write with lessons available to all ages and experience interested in singing, songwriting, recording and piano in all contemporary styles and genres, from pop, to folk, to jazz and rock. Her style is client lead and lessons are tailed according to student’s needs and passions whether that is purely focusing on singing as a hobby, or pursing goals around performing, further study or audition preparation.
She also specialises in working with singers or songwriters who may suffer from performance anxiety, or lack of vocal confidence.

One-On-One Tuition in Singing, Piano, Song-writing, & Recording
All ages and levels are welcome – from the very beginner to advanced (even if you are someone who suffers from anxiety and struggle to even sing in front of one person – let’s do this!)
A trial lesson is required to book ongoing lessons (given my limited spaces and waitlist HM Studio only takes on students who are willing to commit to at least 1 year of training and will make practice at home a priority).
HM Studio is a home-based studio located in the hills of Sandy Bay, Hobart, Tasmania or online via Zoom or Skype. Address will be given on confirmation of lesson. If you are current Mount Carmel College student you can also receive lessons through that system.
Days and Times
Lessons are scheduled between Monday-Thursday. They are individually tailored according to age, level, style, and goals (personal development, auditioning for shows or working towards a recording project such as single, or EP).
There are also options for group workshops and online training.
Vocal Technique, Piano Skills, Songwriting, Performance Coaching, Audition Preparation, Recording
As mentioned above options for lessons are in singing, piano and songwriting sessions available (single lessons or combined). If you are preparing for a recording, gigs, performances, audition preparation. I offer lessons by the term as a general rule as space is limited.
You will required to practice at least every second day for 20-30 minutes to get the most of these lessons working on exercises and songs to build and develop your vocal technique and ability.

24 hours notice is required via text message or email to reschedule or lesson will accrue normal lesson fee.
Lesson rescheduling for that missed lessons (due to student or teacher illness) depends on lesson availability and teacher.
